Jakarta August 27 Riots: Police Hunt Masterminds and Financiers

Police are continuing their investigation into the riots that occurred in Jakarta on August 27, 2026, and are actively pursuing the masterminds and financiers behind the incident. Kombes Iman Imanuddin, Director of General Criminal Investigation at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, stated on Wednesday (2/9/2026), "We are committed to investigating the masterminds, instigators, and financiers behind the riots." He noted that the crowds involved in the riots differed from regular protesters, suggesting a potential "mobilization." The police are currently conducting in-depth investigations into the financiers and those who mobilized the masses. "Although it appears to be a division, we suspect there was mobilization, so we are investigating the masterminds, suspected financiers, and the organizers of the rioting crowds," Iman said. He likened the events to "organized riots that often occur" and urged all parties to stop exploiting children by involving them in illegal activities for personal or group interests. "Children should receive their rights to protection from dangerous situations," he added. Previously, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police arrested 322 people in connection with the riots. Of these, 273 have since been released. A total of 49 individuals have been named suspects, with 44 handled by the Directorate of General Criminal Investigation and five minors by the Directorate of Child and Women Protection. Furthermore, three more individuals were recently arrested for their involvement in damaging CCTV cameras.
