Boeng Prek Lapho National Park Waterfowl Face Flood Threat During Breeding Season

In Cambodia's Boeng Prek Lapho National Park, water levels are rising during the waterfowl breeding season, raising concerns about the impact of floods on eggs and chicks. Conservation groups are intensifying monitoring to ensure the safety of nesting sites. According to monitoring results from August 2026 to the present by park rangers and the biodiversity monitoring team from NatureLife Cambodia, many species of waterfowl are continuing to nest, lay eggs, and some have begun hatching chicks within the Boeng Prek Lapho National Park. Recorded bird species include the Masked Lapwing, Red-crowned Crane, Grey Heron, Little Cormorant, and Black-browed Reedbird, among others. Meanwhile, the water level in this wetland area has risen to approximately over 130 centimeters and continues to increase daily. Due to a lack of large submerged trees that can provide safe, high nesting locations, some waterfowl nests are facing the threat of flooding, which could lead to the destruction of eggs and chicks.
