PhilHealth Accelerates Benefit Expansion to Reduce Out-of-Pocket Costs

(PhilHealth) is rapidly expanding its benefit packages to cover a wider range of illnesses, including several types of cancer, heart disease and maternal and neonatal care, as it seeks to lower out-of-pocket hospital expenses. Bataan Rep. Albert “Abet” Garcia unveiled PhilHealth’s benefit expansion “roadmap” during a congressional briefing. Garcia said the state health insurer’s “roadmap” would allow for the expansion of benefit packages to cover more diseases and conditions, thereby reducing the out-of-pocket expenses of Filipinos. “This is to further reduce the out-of-pocket expenses of our countrymen,” Garcia said. He said that the expansion of PhilHealth’s benefit packages would allow for the coverage of more diseases and conditions. PhilHealth has been continuously expanding its benefit packages over the years to cover more diseases and conditions. In 2023, PhilHealth announced the expansion of its Z Benefits package to include coverage for more types of cancer, heart disease, and kidney disease. It also announced the expansion of its maternal and neonatal care packages to cover more services, including prenatal care, childbirth, and postnatal care. The expansion of PhilHealth’s benefit packages is part of the government’s efforts to improve healthcare access and affordability for all Filipinos. It is also expected to help reduce the burden of medical expenses on households, particularly for those with low incomes.
