Vietnamese Leader, French President Meet Ahead of Paris Talks

Vietnamese Party General Secretary and President To Lam met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, discussing the further deepening of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. Prior to the talks, an official welcome ceremony for President To Lam was held at the Élysée Palace in Paris. Both leaders agreed on the need to fully utilize their respective strengths, capitalize on complementary advantages, elevate strategic areas of cooperation to a higher level, and establish new frameworks for bilateral cooperation. The visit served as an opportunity to reaffirm the long-standing friendship between Vietnam and France and the importance of their strategic partnership. Cooperation across various sectors, including economy, security, culture, and education, was a key focus. Vietnam anticipates leveraging France's advanced technology and investment to drive its economic growth and modernization, while France values access to the rapidly growing Vietnamese market and Vietnam's stable role in the region. Under its one-party system, Vietnam is pursuing a strategy of enhancing external relations to foster further economic development. Strengthening ties with the European Union (EU) is particularly crucial for diversifying partnerships and reducing economic reliance on China. As a key EU member, France is a strategically important partner for Vietnam. The meeting also likely included an exchange of views on regional and international issues. Vietnam seeks to enhance cooperation with the international community on regional security challenges, such as the South China Sea issue, and collaboration with France is seen as part of this effort.
