India to Enhance Cooperation with Cambodia in Digital and Renewable Energy Sectors

PHNOM PENH, Sept 16, 2026 (KPT) — India’s experience in digital public infrastructure and financial technology could provide new areas for knowledge exchange as Cambodia pursues its own digital transformation, the Indian ambassador said at a celebration of the ITEC programme in Phnom Penh. Ambassador Vanlalvawna Bawitlung highlighted India’s growing renewable‑energy capacity, which he said has surpassed 300 gigawatts, alongside developments in hydrogen‑powered transportation. He noted such advances offer lessons for Cambodia as it seeks to diversify energy sources and strengthen resilience. The Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme, launched in 1964, represents a broader channel for engagement, combining technical training with opportunities for knowledge and technology exchange. For Cambodia, the growing focus on emerging technologies could help government institutions strengthen technical capabilities while exposing officials to international practices in areas ranging from AI‑enabled education to digital technologies and cybercrime prevention. The programme also provides a platform for Cambodian alumni to apply skills gained through training to national development. The Phnom Penh event honoured alumni contributions while underscoring ITEC’s longstanding role in strengthening people‑to‑people and institutional links between the two countries. India’s support comes as Cambodia intensifies efforts to build a digital economy and expand renewable energy. Analysts say India’s experience in scaling digital public infrastructure — including biometric identification, mobile payments and e‑governance platforms — could help Cambodia accelerate reforms. The ambassador said the next phase of cooperation should combine technical training with knowledge exchange, enabling Cambodian officials to adapt lessons from India’s digital and energy sectors to local needs.
