Cambodia Unveils Four Strategies to Boost Competitiveness at Toyota Assembly Line Inauguration
At the inauguration of Toyota's new assembly line in Cambodia, the government announced four strategies: reducing trade and investment costs, accelerating clean energy transition, strengthening cybersecurity, and facilitating investment. AKP Phnom Penh, July 02, 2026 -- The Royal Government of Cambodia has outlined four key strategies to enhance national competitiveness during the official inauguration of the TOYOTA HILUX TRAVO assembly line at Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. in the Royal Group Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone. The strategies include reducing trade and investment costs, accelerating the clean energy transition with a target of 70 percent clean energy by 2030, strengthening cybersecurity through the Anti-Cyber Scam Law, and improving investment facilitation through digitalisation, including the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC)’s cdcIPM system and streamlined public services. The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Deputy Prime Minister and CDC First Vice Chairman H.E. Sun Chanthol and Japanese Ambassador H.E. UENO Atsushi, with participation from senior officials and private sector representatives. Speaking at the event, H.E. Sun Chanthol welcomed Toyota Tsusho’s investment, saying it reflects strong confidence in Cambodia’s economic potential and industrial development. He highlighted that the project demonstrates Cambodia’s growing capacity in advanced manufacturing and supports the Royal Government’s broader strategy to build an industrial ecosystem and develop skilled human capital. He also encouraged Toyota and its supply chain partners to expand investment in automotive components, technology, and workforce training to strengthen local value chains and create quality jobs. Following the ceremony, the delegation toured the factory, met workers and trainees, and observed the assembly process, which meets international standards. The event concluded with the unveiling of the first Cambodia-assembled Toyota Hilux Travo, followed by a test drive by the Deputy Prime Minister, symbolising government support for the country’s emerging automotive industry. Cambodia currently has eight operating vehicle manufacturing and assembly facilities with a combined production capacity of more than 38,000 vehicles per year, with several more factories under development. Since inaugurating its plant in 2024, Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing (Cambodia) has assembled 6,250 Toyota Fortuner and Hilux vehicles. During the same period, the company expanded its monthly assembly capacity more than tenfold—from 40 vehicles when production began in 2024 to about 400 vehicles per month by the end of 2025.
