Prabowo Pledges Massive Revitalization of Fishing Villages, Targeting 5,000 by 2029
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has announced plans to develop 5,000 "Merah Putih Fishing Villages" (KNMP) by the end of 2029. The initiative aims to enhance fishing infrastructure, including the potential construction of small airfields, to bolster support for fishermen.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has announced a target to complete the development of 5,000 "Merah Putih Fishing Villages" (KNMP) by the end of 2029. This program is considered a form of government attention to Indonesian fishermen. President Prabowo explained that the development of KNMP will be carried out in stages. The target is to complete 1,300 villages this year, followed by 2,000 villages in each of the next two years. "Our fishermen, who have not been paid attention to for decades, we will complete 1,300 fishing villages this year. Next year, our target is 2,000 fishing villages. In 2028, another 2,000," Prabowo stated in his remarks at the 28th Anniversary of the National Mandate Party (PAN), as quoted from PAN TV's YouTube channel on Friday (18/9/2026). Prabowo said that KNMP will later have facilities such as auction halls, boat access, cold storage, workshops, ice factories, and the construction of Fishing Fuel Stations (SPBN). He even stated his readiness to build airfields if necessary. "If needed, we will build airfields near these fishing villages so that valuable, fresh fish can be transported by plane to world markets," he said. Prabowo added that the government has ordered at least 1,500 fishing vessels with a capacity of over 100 Gross Tons (GT). These vessels will later be distributed to support fishing activities in various fishing villages. "We will also soon order at least 1,500 fishing vessels over 100 Gross Tons. We will procure smaller ones immediately to be delivered to these fishing villages," he concluded. Information source: Detik
