Hanoi Accelerates Construction of 7 Major Bridges Over Red River to Boost Connectivity

Hanoi, Vietnam's capital, is focusing on the construction of seven major bridge projects across the Red River. These initiatives aim to significantly enhance the city's transportation infrastructure and accelerate economic growth and urban development. The seven bridges, including Van Phuc, Hong Ha, Thuong Cat, Tu Lien, Tran Hung Dao, Ngoc Hoi, and Me So, are either under construction or in the planning stages. The Tran Hung Dao Bridge, in particular, is being built with a target completion date in the second quarter of 2027, with construction proceeding at a pace that has continued even through the Lunar New Year holidays, indicating its high priority. Through these projects, Hanoi aims to alleviate traffic congestion, improve logistics efficiency, and promote development in surrounding areas. The construction of these bridges is part of Hanoi's strategy of state-led infrastructure investment within its one-party system. The Vietnamese government, prioritizing economic growth, views the development of transportation networks as a foundation for economic progress, recognizing the strengthening of the capital region's functions as essential for enhancing national competitiveness. Furthermore, these infrastructure investments are also linked to Vietnam's strategy of strengthening domestic economic autonomy and regional influence amidst complex relations with China. Large-scale infrastructure projects contribute to domestic job creation and the revitalization of related industries, which in turn supports social stability. However, challenges such as land acquisition and resident relocation accompany these large-scale developments. Efforts are ongoing in the Hong Ha commune, a planned site for the Tran Hung Dao Bridge, to ensure the resettlement of residents and the smooth acquisition of land.
