Vietnam's First Drive-In Cinema Opens in Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City's first drive-in cinema, VigaCinema, is drawing attention for its unique concept of allowing moviegoers to watch films on a large outdoor screen from the comfort of their cars. Priced at VND 299,000 per person for those using their own vehicles, the experience offers a blend of entertainment and a special outing. Located on a sprawling site in Binh Trung Ward, the cinema features a massive 600-inch LED screen. Showtimes run from 7:30 PM to 10:00 PM, recreating the atmosphere of 1950s American drive-in theaters. The operators highlighted that securing film copyrights, establishing an audio transmission system, and tailoring the operational process for the Vietnamese market were their biggest challenges. The film selection includes a variety of genres, focusing on both Vietnamese and international titles that have already been released, aiming to cater to diverse audience preferences and encourage repeat visits. The emphasis is on providing a unique experience rather than showcasing new releases. Audio is broadcast directly through car speakers by tuning into a specific radio frequency provided by the cinema. This venture follows the emergence of drive-in theaters in Vietnam, with the first appearing in Quang Ninh province in April 2021 amidst COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. VigaCinema in Ho Chi Minh City, which officially opened on July 24, has been attracting a steady stream of patrons, particularly on weekends. Its appeal lies in offering a private viewing environment for friends, couples, or families, distinguishing it from traditional cinemas. One attendee remarked, "The entire experience, from watching the sunset and enjoying food to watching a movie right in the car, is wonderful." However, some audience members have suggested raising the screen height for better viewing angles, and the outdoor nature of the venue means the experience can be significantly affected by weather conditions, such as heavy rain or strong winds.
