A major restoration of a 20-meter Naga balustrade on the western side of the first enclosure, south of Angkor Wat, has commenced. This section is a key tourist photo spot and a priority for structural preservation, with completion expected by the end of 2026.

Siem Reap Province – The Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region (APSARA National Authority) has begun restoring and reinforcing a 20-meter-long Naga (dragon) balustrade on the western side of the first enclosure, south of Angkor Wat. Archaeologist Soy Sopharin from APSARA National Authority highlighted that the southern section of this balustrade had previously broken and completely collapsed, necessitating restoration and reinforcement by the authority. This location is a special point where tourists often stand by the southern moat to capture reflections of the temple's spires. As the damaged area is adjacent to popular photographic spots, APSARA prioritized this repair project. The restoration project, spanning 20 meters, commenced in June and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. The team is engaged in removing broken stones, repairing fragmented pieces, carving pedestals, and crafting new Naga body sections to replace missing or damaged stone parts. Experts indicate that this 20-meter section comprises eight Naga body segments and nine pedestals. The remaining old stones can only be connected to three to four Naga body segments, with the rest requiring replacement with new stone. Currently, APSARA National Authority is also undertaking the creation of a risk map for Naga balustrades surrounding Angkor Wat to prepare for future restoration plans. Source: Koh Santepheap Khmer
