Banteay Meanchey Province Encourages Home Stays to Boost Resident Income and Livelihoods

In Banteay Meanchey Province, northwestern Cambodia, there is a growing initiative to encourage residents to develop home-stay businesses. This program aims to transition residents from temporary living situations to securing independent income sources and improving household living standards. Governor Oum Ratry has urged residents in six villages to seize the opportunity presented by their current living conditions to establish home-stay facilities, thereby generating additional income and stabilizing family livelihoods. The governor explained that setting up a home-stay business does not require significant capital investment. It can be initiated by properly preparing existing residences to offer a decent, hygienic, safe, and pleasant environment. Residents interested in establishing home stays are to provide necessary information, such as their address and contact number, to the team for coordination. The proliferation of home stays is expected to bring multi-layered benefits to the community. An increase in guests can stimulate demand for related services and products, including food, beverages, local produce, and transportation, creating income opportunities for many families, not just the home-stay owners. This reflects the provincial administration's focus on enhancing residents' self-reliance, encouraging the creation of sustainable small businesses as an alternative to aid dependency. For residents living in the area known as 'Rom Cham Village,' promoting home-stay businesses not only offers a new occupation but also opens up opportunities to generate income using existing resources, increase self-determination, and strengthen family livelihoods. Through resident participation and coordination by local authorities, home stays can become a part of community economic activity, bringing new prospects for living and building better livelihoods in 'Rom Cham Village.'
