Cambodia Reaffirms Colonial-Era Maps as Sole Reference in Thailand Border Dispute
Cambodia has reiterated its stance on the border dispute with Thailand, stating it will not recognize any changes brought about by force and insists on resolution through international law and existing treaties. The government emphasized colonial-era maps and records as the sole reference, also noting the ongoing difficulties for displaced residents.
PHNOM PENH, July 31, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has reaffirmed its unwavering stance against any alteration of its border with Thailand through the use of force. Government spokesman Pen Bona stated on Friday that the resolution of disputes must be based on international law, existing treaties, and the boundary established by the Franco-Siamese Boundary Commission. "Cambodia absolutely does not recognize any alteration of the border resulting from the use of force," Bona emphasized. He added that barbed wire, shipping containers, or newly built structures cannot, under any circumstances, replace the internationally recognized border. According to the Ministry of Interior, approximately 20,000 displaced residents remain unable to return to their homes because conditions are not yet safe. Some areas are blocked by obstacles such as containers and barbed wire, while other homes have been damaged or destroyed. The border dispute has heightened tensions in recent months, with Cambodian authorities insisting that any resolution must be peaceful and legally binding. Separately, Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet met with UN Special Rapporteur Thomas Andrews on July 30. The Prime Minister informed the envoy that Cambodia remains committed to resolving the dispute peacefully, in accordance with international law and treaties, conventions, and agreements between the two countries.
