Norwegian Man Living Rough in Thailand for Over 2 Years Finally Returning Home

A 44-year-old Norwegian man, Odd Stian Hesseberg, who had been living rough around Pak Kret in Nonthaburi for over two years, is now set to return home after Thai immigration authorities intervened to assist him. His plight came to light following a social media post. Hesseberg stated that he first came to Thailand alone about two and a half years ago to meet a female friend in Nakhon Sawan, but lost contact with her. He later traveled to Nonthaburi, where he claims his bag containing his passport and other documents was stolen. Without his identification, he found himself living rough, sleeping at temples and along the waterfront. He expressed a desire to return to Norway but was unsure of who to contact for assistance. Immigration officers located Hesseberg at Wat Klang Kret on August 7 and reviewed his immigration record. He entered Thailand on March 3, 2023, on a 30-day tourist visa and received an extension until May 16, 2023. His current overstay status stands at 1,179 days. Authorities are now questioning Hesseberg and coordinating with the Norwegian Embassy to arrange his repatriation in accordance with Thai law. Temple staff mentioned that they had previously attempted to help him return home, including arranging transport to the Norwegian Embassy approximately three months ago. They had expressed concern for his well-being due to his solitary living situation in public spaces. After being taken into the custody of immigration officers, Hesseberg conveyed his gratitude to the temple staff and local residents who had assisted him during his time in Thailand. He expressed happiness at the prospect of finally returning to his home country, Norway, after more than two years.
