Vietnam Tourism Shifts to Quality Focus, Welcomes Over 6.5 Million During National Day Holiday
Vietnam's tourism sector welcomed over 6.5 million visitors during the National Day holiday, an 18.1% year-on-year increase. The government has outlined a new policy prioritizing quality over quantity in tourism development, accelerating a shift towards experiential and sustainable tourism.
Vietnam's tourism sector welcomed an estimated over 6.5 million domestic and foreign tourists during the National Day holiday from August 29 to September 2, marking an 18.1% year-on-year increase. This strong performance underscores Vietnam's commitment to tourism as a spearhead economic sector. A new vision for tourism development and governance, outlined in Resolution No. 26-NQ/TW on August 22, aims to fundamentally renew mindsets and approaches, shifting the focus from quantity to quality and enhancing the sector's contribution to the national economy. This aligns with evolving traveler preferences, who increasingly seek authentic local experiences, interaction with communities and nature, and sustainable, low-impact trips. Hanoi is responding by designing tourism events to inspire exploration, incorporating virtual reality, handicraft workshops, and new tour discoveries. Da Nang is integrating cuisine into tourism itineraries, linking culinary promotion with destination branding and cultural preservation. Experiential activities, such as Mong flute performances and traditional craft competitions, are also being highlighted. The upgraded Lien Khuong Airport is expected to boost tourism for Da Lat by improving access to international markets like the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, India, Taiwan, Singapore, and Russia. However, addressing the long-standing challenge of seasonality remains crucial, with destinations looking to develop year-round products and restructure their tourism ecosystems. Medical tourism is also a significant contributor, with an estimated 300,000 international visitors annually generating USD 1-2 billion in spending. Regionally, a joint action plan for ACMECS tourism cooperation (2026-2028) focuses on enhancing connectivity, digital transformation, ecotourism, and human resource development. The government also views MICE tourism as a strategic product to attract high-quality visitors, boost trade and investment, and enhance national competitiveness.
