Vietnam Urges Swift, Prudent Restructuring of Vocational Education

Deputy Prime Minister Le Tien Chau emphasized that the restructuring of vocational education in Vietnam is not about reducing training capacity but could potentially lead to an increase in enrollment that meets actual demand. He stated that vocational education institutions transferred to local management should serve not only their respective localities but also the human resource needs of their regions and the country. This directive comes against the backdrop of Vietnam's rapid economic growth, where the cultivation of a highly skilled workforce is a pressing issue. The Vietnamese government, under its one-party system, recognizes the importance of human capital as a driver of economic development and aims to enhance international competitiveness through the optimization of its education system. Particularly, with strong economic ties to China, there is a governmental understanding that high-quality vocational training is essential for upgrading and diversifying domestic industries. The Deputy Prime Minister urged that the restructuring process requires swift, prudent, and firm action. This points to the necessity of rapidly advancing reforms to streamline educational institutions and correct any disconnect with industry needs. Simultaneously, careful consideration is called for to ensure that rapid changes do not compromise the quality of education or equal opportunities. Vietnam has recently seen remarkable economic growth, primarily in its manufacturing sector, driven by actively attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). To sustain and accelerate this growth, upskilling the workforce is indispensable, and vocational education plays a central role. This move to restructure vocational education can be seen as part of Vietnam's strategy to advance to the next stage of its economic development.
