Thailand Reconsiders "Land Bridge" Project, Prioritizing "Missing Links"

Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has instructed relevant agencies to review the development plan for the "Land Bridge" project, while simultaneously accelerating the development of "Missing Links" in the domestic transportation network that can be implemented immediately. This aims to enhance the completeness of the rail and road networks, thereby improving the country's transportation, trade, and investment efficiency. The Prime Minister stated that Thailand's geographical advantage as a regional hub necessitates the completion of these missing links. This will lead to faster cargo transportation, reduced logistics costs, increased competitiveness, and attract investment. The importance of a robust transportation network seamlessly connecting land, sea, and air is growing, especially amidst increasing uncertainties in global shipping routes, such as the escalating tensions in the Middle East. The government is prioritizing the development of Missing Links along the North-South Economic Corridor, connecting China, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Specifically, efforts will be made to strengthen the rail network connection from Chiang Khong district in Chiang Rai province to Nateuy in Laos, and further to Mohan in China. This initiative aims to promote the complete connectivity of the region's rail network, thereby enhancing cargo transportation efficiency and international trade. As a short-term measure, the government will expedite the development of the rail and road network connecting Ranong province and Chumphon province. This will increase options for cargo transportation between the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Thailand. The next steps will be determined after a comprehensive evaluation of the project's economic feasibility, investment models, and returns. The government emphasizes investments that are practical, yield quick results, and bring tangible benefits to the public and businesses. Completing the transportation network's missing links will reduce logistics costs, expand trade and investment opportunities, and elevate Thailand's role as a regional connectivity hub.
