Cambodia to Host International Conference on Combating Online Scams, Highlighting Government Responsibility

Cambodia is set to host an international conference on combating online scams in the capital, Phnom Penh, from September 23-24. Minister of Information, Net Phoktra, stated that the conference reflects the Cambodian government's responsible stance and openness to international cooperation in fighting technological fraud. The minister emphasized that organizing this international conference aims to show the world that Cambodia, once a victim of such scams, is now taking measures and can serve as a model for sharing experiences with other countries on how it has swiftly cracked down on numerous online scam cases. Furthermore, Net Phoktra asserted that Cambodia has no reason to conceal the issue of online scams and derives no benefit from such criminal activities. "This event aims to show the world that Cambodia is a country that has suffered from online scam crimes, and therefore, Cambodia needs to restore its reputation and dignity through the government's efforts to crack down on online scam criminals," the Minister of Information stated. He also affirmed Cambodia's pleasure in hosting this international conference on combating online scams, acknowledging it as a shared regional and global problem. Cambodia recognizes online scams as a serious issue and is itself a victim, currently taking measures to address it. Statistics indicate that from July 2025 to August 2026, Cambodian authorities investigated over 830 suspected locations, with actual crackdowns conducted at 663 sites. Among these, 86 large-scale online scam operations were dismantled, and over 20,000 foreign suspects were deported.
