Cambodia Bans Import of Used Batteries and E-waste

The Ministry of Environment in Cambodia has announced a complete ban on the import of used batteries and electrical and electronic equipment into the country. The ministry has observed in the past that locations involved in the stocking, distribution, and sale of used electrical and electronic equipment have been importing used items mixed with new ones. These used items, including air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, computers, and mobile phones, are considered hazardous waste due to their content of toxic substances such as mercury, cadmium, nickel, chromium, arsenic, and lead. Improper disposal or dismantling of these items can lead to severe impacts on public health, biodiversity, and the ecosystem. This import prohibition is being enforced in accordance with Cambodia's environmental law and natural resources code, as well as sub-decrees on solid waste management. The Ministry of Environment has urged governors of all provinces and the capital to strictly enforce these legal measures. This decision signifies Cambodia's increasing commitment to environmental protection and public health amidst its ongoing economic development. It particularly clarifies the nation's policy to prioritize domestic environmental conservation, especially in light of concerns regarding the influx of electronic waste from countries like China.
