Vietnam's Top Leader Meets US Business Representatives on War Victims Search Initiative

During his attendance at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President Tô Lâm met with representatives from the US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) and other US businesses on September 23rd. During the meeting, General Secretary and President Lâm received a report on the Vietnam War Missing Persons Initiative (VWAI). This meeting suggests Vietnam's intent to advance its cooperative relationship with the United States, a nation with whom it shares the legacy of the Vietnam War. The VWAI is a humanitarian effort aimed at healing the scars of war and easing the grief of bereaved families. US corporate participation in such initiatives is considered to contribute to building trust between the two countries. While Vietnam continues its economic growth under a one-party system, it faces complex external relations, particularly with China. In this context, strengthening ties with the United States can be seen as part of Vietnam's strategy for diplomatic diversification. Specifically, overcoming historical challenges and advancing cooperation in humanitarian fields holds the potential to contribute to the stabilization and development of bilateral relations. Following the meeting, General Secretary and President Lâm also visited the US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer.
