Cambodia Urges Enhanced Prison Security, Crackdown on Contraband

A senior official from the Ministry of Interior has urged all prisons to strengthen their leadership, management, and timely resolution of challenges to enhance work efficiency. Emphasis was placed on reinforcing security within prisons. Speaking at the monthly meeting of the General Department of Prisons on the morning of June 29, Mr. Heng Hak, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Interior, stressed the need to continue paying attention to and strengthening security within prisons. He highlighted the importance of preventing the smuggling of prohibited items, particularly mobile phones and drugs, and curbing criminal activities within prison walls. He further pushed for the work of classifying inmates by security level and organizing their housing according to these classifications, in line with established procedures and regulations. Continued attention was also called for in addressing significant challenges, overcrowding, developing staff expertise, and improving prison infrastructure. Additionally, he urged for the review and acceleration of the preparation and updating of relevant legal documents, especially those pertaining to prison procedures, to support prison management. According to a report by Mr. Chhun Sanat, First Class Senior Inspector and Director General of Prisons, the General Department of Prisons highlighted key work outcomes including the status of inmates, implementation of prison procedures, health care, construction projects, rehabilitation and education programs, security, social reintegration, and administrative affairs.
