Indonesia Eyes Solar Project on Trans-Java Expressway for 100 GW Plan

Indonesia is exploring the potential of installing solar power photovoltaic (PV) systems along the Trans-Java toll road, a major transportation artery in the country. This initiative is part of the nation's ambitious target to achieve 100 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy by 2025. The concept aims to leverage the vast land available along the toll road to expand renewable energy production capacity. If realized, it would not only increase the share of renewables in Indonesia's energy mix but also represent a significant step towards balancing infrastructure development with environmental goals. Specifically, the installation of solar panels on road shoulders, central dividers, and service areas is being considered. As one of the world's largest carbon emitters, Indonesia needs to accelerate its transition to renewable energy to meet its Paris Agreement commitments. However, the country's vast geography and existing reliance on fossil fuels complicate this transition. The proposed solar project on the toll road offers an innovative approach by utilizing existing infrastructure, minimizing new land development while promoting renewable energy adoption. Successful implementation will involve addressing numerous considerations, including technical challenges, financing, and environmental impact assessments. Nevertheless, if successful, the project is expected to enhance Indonesia's energy security and contribute to sustainable development.
