Indonesia Forest Fires: Kalimantan Sees Rising Hotspots, Sumatra Decreases

Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has disclosed the latest situation regarding forest and land fires (karhutla) in six provinces across Kalimantan and Sumatra. In Riau, South Sumatra, and Jambi provinces, a decrease in the number of hotspots has been recorded. However, provinces such as West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and Central Kalimantan have conversely detected an increase in hotspots. This development suggests a divergence in fire risk across different regions as the dry season progresses. Forest fires are a recurring and significant issue in Indonesia, especially during the dry season, causing severe air pollution, adverse health effects, economic damage, and harm to biodiversity. The government is actively engaged in fire prevention and control measures, though the vastness of the archipelago and its geographical complexities pose continuous challenges. Fires in peatlands, prevalent in the Kalimantan region, are particularly problematic due to their tendency to spread underground, making extinguishment a difficult task. The observed increase in hotspots could potentially be attributed to the intensifying dry conditions driven by climate change, as well as human activities associated with land utilization.
