Two Siblings Die in Surabaya House Fire, Trapped in Locked Room

A tragic house fire in Surabaya on Sunday, September 13, 2026, resulted in the deaths of two young siblings, aged 5 and 7. The fire broke out at the residence of Moch Kayis Khabibullah in Simorejo XVI, Simomulyo, Sukomanunggal. Firefighters were alerted around 3:44 PM WIB, by which time local residents had already begun extinguishing the blaze. Upon inspection of the premises, emergency services discovered the bodies of the two children inside a room. Initial reports suggest the siblings were asleep when the fire began. Residents who noticed smoke emanating from the house attempted to enter and provide assistance. However, they found the door to the room where the smoke originated was locked from the outside. Surabaya Fire and Rescue Department Head, Laksita Rini Sevriani, stated, "The two children were found in one room. Reports indicate they were sleeping at the time of the incident. The fire was first noticed by local residents who saw smoke billowing from inside the house." She further explained that while the house was accessible, the door to the room was locked from the outside. "It is suspected that the victims did not die from severe burns, but rather from inhaling dense smoke, leading to oxygen deprivation inside the smoke-filled room," she added.
