Vietnam Boosts Digital Copyright to Foster Cultural Industries

Vietnam is focusing on strengthening digital copyright protection to foster the development of its cultural industries. Within the draft Law on Cultural Industry Development, currently under consideration, the establishment of a transparent and effective copyright environment is positioned as an extremely crucial requirement for protecting creative value and leveraging intellectual property as a development resource. This initiative is also linked to proposals for amending the Publishing Law, which aim to enhance measures against copyright infringement in the digital space, particularly considering AI-driven infringements, and to strengthen penalties. Resolving 'bottlenecks' in music copyright fee collection is also considered essential for the healthy development of the cultural industries. Under Vietnam's one-party system, government-led industrial development policies are a key pillar of economic growth. Promoting the cultural industry is part of a comprehensive strategy that goes beyond mere cultural preservation, aiming for new job creation and increased economic value. Especially as the country has achieved rapid economic growth in recent years, the importance of intellectual property protection has increased, and alignment with international standards is also being sought. In its relations with China, issues surrounding intellectual property rights always carry a sensitive aspect. However, Vietnam is urgently working to establish a copyright protection system to nurture its domestic industries and enhance international competitiveness.
