Cambodia Pursues Enhanced Cross-Border Trade with China via Advanced Manufacturing, Digital Economy, and Logistics

PHNOM PENH, Sept. 3, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia is actively seeking to unlock new cross‑border trade opportunities with China by prioritizing the development of advanced manufacturing, agro‑processing, the digital economy, and logistics. This strategic push aims to diversify the nation's economy and enhance its global competitiveness, according to government officials. Lim Lork Piseth, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Commerce, articulated these priorities in a keynote address titled “A New Blue Ocean of Cross‑Border Trade between China and Cambodia” during the China–ASEAN Entrepreneurs Summit held in Phnom Penh on September 1. The summit, organized by the Cambodian National Federation of Trade and Investment Promotion Associations, gathered businesses and investors to foster cooperation and identify avenues for market expansion and value‑chain connectivity. Piseth highlighted Cambodia's focus on advanced manufacturing and technology sectors, including electronics, automotive components, plastics, and precision engineering, to broaden its industrial base and engage in higher‑value production. Agro‑processing is also a key area, with plans to invest in packaging, storage, and cold‑chain systems to elevate the value of agricultural exports. Furthermore, the cross‑border digital economy and logistics are central to the strategy, encompassing e‑commerce, payment systems, financial technology, and logistics hubs designed to streamline trade flows with China and other regional markets. The summit facilitated concrete cooperation, marked by the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) related to trade, investment, digital economy, and logistics. Key partners involved included the Cambodia Securities Exchange, ZTO Express, and Bank of China. Data from the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) indicates that Cambodia–China trade surpassed $11 billion in the first half of 2026, representing a 25.4% year‑on‑year increase, underscoring the critical importance of bilateral commercial ties.
