Rwanda Seeks to Deepen Defense and Security Ties with Indonesia
Rwanda's Ambassador to Indonesia highlighted the ongoing success of defense and security cooperation between the two nations, expressing a desire for further strengthening of ties. Specific examples include police training collaborations and enhanced joint efforts against transnational organized crime.
The Ambassador of Rwanda to Indonesia, Abdul Karim Harelimana, highlighted the well-progressing partnership between Rwanda and Indonesia in the defense and security (hankam) sector, expressing a desire to further strengthen this cooperation. Responding to questions about the achievements of bilateral cooperation on the sidelines of the traditional Rwandan celebration, Umuganura, in Jakarta on Friday evening, August 7, Ambassador Harelimana stated, "One of the other major achievements in the relationship between Rwanda and Indonesia is the establishment of a dialogue on security and defense cooperation." According to the ambassador, Indonesia and Rwanda have signed a letter of intent (LoI) to facilitate the exploration of cooperation in the defense and security field, enabling continuous discussions. A concrete achievement highlighted is the strengthening of the partnership between the Indonesian National Police and the Rwandan National Police, which now facilitates Rwandan police personnel to undergo police education in Indonesia. Previously, on October 6, 2025, the Chief of the Indonesian National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, and the Chief of the Rwandan National Police, Inspector General of Police Felix Namuhoranye, signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen the eradication of organized transnational crime. This cooperation also encompasses the exchange of information and expertise, joint training programs, and the development of police resource capacity. Indonesia views this partnership as demonstrating the commitment of both countries to international police cooperation and law enforcement. Furthermore, on February 5, 2026, Ambassador Harelimana met with the Indonesian Minister of Defense, Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, in Jakarta to discuss bilateral partnerships in the defense sector. During the meeting, opportunities for defense cooperation were discussed, including the potential for establishing a defense dialogue forum to support sustainable future cooperation.
