Cambodia Seeks to Boost Tourism from Japan, Visa Relaxation Under Consideration

Efforts to promote Cambodia's tourism potential within Japan and consider visa relaxation for Japanese tourists are accelerating. On July 9, 2026, Minister of Tourism, H.E. Thong Khon, met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia, H.E. Ueno Atsushi, who is concluding his diplomatic mission in Cambodia. The meeting was held at the Ministry of Tourism. During the meeting, H.E. Ueno Atsushi pledged to introduce Cambodia's tourism attractions to the Japanese public based on his firsthand experience from touring all provinces and cities in Cambodia. He further proposed the possibility of considering visa exemption for Japanese tourists visiting Cambodia. H.E. Ueno Atsushi expressed gratitude for the close cooperation from the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Ministry of Tourism. He also affirmed continued support for strengthening and expanding cooperation between the two countries, especially in tourism, human resource development, tourism promotion, and people-to-people exchanges. In response, H.E. Thong Khon expressed his profound gratitude to the government, people, and the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia for their continuous support for Cambodia's development and its tourism sector. He highly praised and valued the efforts and active contributions of H.E. Ueno Atsushi in strengthening and expanding the excellent friendship and cooperation between the Kingdom of Cambodia and Japan, making it more robust and fruitful, particularly in the tourism sector during his tenure. The Minister emphasized that Cambodia remains a safe tourist destination offering warm hospitality, ready to welcome Japanese and international tourists. He also requested Japan to continue promoting Cambodia's tourism potential, facilitate the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on tourism cooperation between the two countries, expand flight connectivity between Japan and Cambodia, support human resource development in the tourism sector, and organize familiarization trips (FAM Trips) for Japanese tourism companies, media, content creators, and investors to explore Cambodia's tourism potential. In conclusion, H.E. Thong Khon once again thanked the government and people of Japan for always being an important partner of Cambodia and reaffirmed their shared commitment to further strengthening and expanding the excellent and fruitful cooperation between the two countries for the benefit of both nations and their peoples. The Kingdom of Cambodia and Japan have maintained diplomatic relations since 1953 and currently have a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership."
