Student in North Sumatra Recovers from Suspected Memory Loss After Nutrition Program Poisoning

Febiona Purba, a 16-year-old student in Karo Regency, North Sumatra, who was suspected of suffering memory loss due to poisoning from a nutrition program, is now showing signs of recovery. Donal Simanjuntak, head of the Nutrition Fulfillment Service Office (KPPG) in Medan, explained that Febiona can now communicate well and recount her experiences. According to KPPG staff who accompanied her at the hospital, Febiona recognized her family and friends and engaged in good conversation. Febiona's father, Elvinus, had initially reported that his daughter experienced memory loss during treatment at RSU Haji Hospital in Medan. However, upon meeting her again at Adam Malik Hospital, Febiona recognized Donal and was able to converse. The KPPG, along with the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), will continue to monitor Febiona's health condition. The head of BGN is also paying close attention to the victim's health. Meanwhile, North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution stated that he is awaiting the results of the latest examinations, including Febiona's abdominal and neurological conditions. The governor emphasized the need for comprehensive checks, including psychological evaluations to assess potential trauma from the poisoning. Zulkarnain Barus, head of the North Sumatra Education Office, is also monitoring Febiona's situation and intends to coordinate with school officials to facilitate her return to school once she has recovered. Febiona was reportedly an academically strong student and served as the vice chair of the student council. Previously, Febiona was reported to have lost her memory after suffering poisoning from the "Makanan Bergizi Gratis" (MBG) or Free Nutritious Food program. After being hospitalized and returning home, she experienced seizures and, after treatment at RSU Haji Hospital, her speech reportedly regressed to that of a child. Her father stated she could no longer recognize those around her. Febiona's physical recovery is still ongoing, making her return to school difficult at this time. Reports indicate that her tongue has slightly retracted inward, causing speech difficulties. Elvinus mentioned that she has seen a psychiatrist and received medication from neurologists.
