Indonesia Pushes for Management of Outermost Small Islands in Archipelago Bill

The Maritime Border Management Agency (BNPP), under Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, is strongly advocating for enhanced management of the nation's outermost small islands to maintain national sovereignty and ensure the sustainable utilization of its vast marine resources. This initiative is expected to be incorporated into the Archipelago Regions Bill (RUU Daerah Kepulauan), which is currently under deliberation. As the world's largest archipelagic nation, comprising approximately 17,500 islands spanning three major time zones, Indonesia possesses an extensive territorial sea and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The outermost small islands, particularly those situated along its borders with neighboring countries, are strategically critical, making the strengthening of their management system an urgent task from a national security perspective. The BNPP emphasizes the necessity of comprehensive management measures for these islands, including infrastructure development, enhanced surveillance systems, and environmental conservation. If the bill is enacted, it will establish a legal framework for the development and management of these islands, thereby strengthening measures against illegal fishing and territorial disputes. It is also expected to contribute to accurate assessment of marine resources and the formulation of effective utilization plans. This bill is poised to be a significant step for Indonesia in reaffirming its identity as a maritime nation and effectively managing and utilizing its extensive maritime domain.
