Cambodia Aims to Become Regional Hub for Auto Parts Production and Distribution, Premier States

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has expressed a strong ambition to transform the country into a hub for automotive parts production and regional distribution. This statement was made during the inauguration ceremony of the GAC vehicle assembly plant in Kampong Thom Province on September 17, 2026. Prime Minister Hun Manet mentioned discussions with Japanese companies, stating that after exploring several countries including the Philippines, Japan ultimately decided to choose Cambodia as a location for producing and distributing automotive parts within the region. To achieve this goal, the Prime Minister instructed relevant ministries and institutions to consider further support and incentives for this company, as the objective extends beyond domestic supply to regional distribution. "This is our big goal," the Prime Minister emphasized. "Instead of exporting complete vehicles to supply the regional market, if we can export 10 million parts annually and produce and supply steering wheels and tires for distribution within the region, we will certainly create jobs and enhance our skills." He further stated, "If we become strong, we will aim to export outside the region and supply external production chains. This is the goal and the policy for developing Cambodia's industrial sector." Currently, Cambodia has a total of 15 vehicle assembly and manufacturing plants. Among these, 10 are operational, 2 are not yet operational, and 3 additional plants have applied for investment registration and are under construction. The total investment in this sector amounts to approximately $248 million USD, with 28% domestic investment and 72% foreign investment, creating a total of 2,744 jobs.
