DICT Launches Free Public Wi-Fi in 160 Sites Across Two Cotabato Provinces

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato — The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has expanded its Free Internet Access in Public Spaces (PFIAPS) program to 160 public sites in South Cotabato and North Cotabato provinces, giving communities free internet access in schools, barangay halls, health centers and other government facilities. The program was officially launched Thursday. The initiative aims to enhance community access to information and bridge the digital divide. The Philippines faces significant disparities in internet access between urban and rural areas, as well as across different income brackets. The DICT's free Wi-Fi service seeks to create more opportunities for citizens to access information and digital services. Access to essential services such as education, government services, and health information is heavily dependent on internet connectivity. The rollout of free Wi-Fi is expected to improve access to these fundamental services, contributing to the revitalization of local economies and the enhancement of residents' quality of life. The Philippine government considers digital inclusion a key pillar of national development, and the expansion of programs like PFIAPS is part of this strategy.
