Banteay Meanchey province, Cambodia – A workshop was held at the Trapaing Thma Reservoir Natural Protected Area in Banteay Meanchey province to promote the project "Empowering Communities in the Management and Governance of the Trapaing Thma Reservoir Tourism Natural Protected Area (ECGM-ATT)". The initiative aims to enhance local community empowerment for effective natural resource management and sustainable tourism development. Chea Kraiyong, Deputy Governor of Banteay Meanchey province, representing Governor Ouk Ratree, stated that empowering local communities is a crucial strategy for ensuring efficient natural resource management, good governance, and sustainable development of natural tourism, thereby creating income and improving the livelihoods of residents in the area. The workshop brought together representatives from relevant ministries and units around the province, deputy district governors, commune authorities, and numerous representatives from the community committees of natural protected areas, all identified as vital partners in jointly conserving and developing the natural protected area into a source of green economy for the community. Chea Kraiyong emphasized that nature conservation cannot solely rely on state institutions but requires the active participation of citizens and local communities who live in and directly benefit from these resources. Therefore, strengthening capacities, increasing awareness, and granting communities the right to participate in decision-making are the fundamental pillars of good governance and sustainable development. He further stated that the ECGM-ATT project will contribute to strengthening the role of communities in managing natural protected areas, enhancing cooperation between authorities, relevant institutions, and development partners, and promoting the responsible use of natural resources in line with the government's policy on environmental conservation and climate change impact reduction. He urged all relevant parties to continue close collaboration to preserve this valuable natural asset for the benefit of current and future generations. The Trapaing Thma Reservoir Natural Protected Area, located in Poey Char commune, Phnom Srok district, is a significant eco-tourism area in northwest Cambodia with high potential for nature conservation, tourism, and community economic development. The area features a large reservoir that serves as a water source for agriculture and a habitat for various water bird species, notably the Sarus Crane, a globally rare bird and a symbol of biodiversity conservation in Cambodia. In addition to cranes, it hosts numerous other bird species, fish, and a rich ecosystem that attracts national and international researchers and tourists. Moreover, the beautiful natural scenery, clean air, and tranquility make Trapaing Thma Reservoir a promising destination for developing eco-tourism, bird watching, nature studies, and community-based tourism, which can create jobs and additional income for local residents. Experts believe that with effective management, active community participation, and appropriate investment in tourism infrastructure, the Trapaing Thma Reservoir Natural Protected Area will become a key eco-tourism destination for Banteay Meanchey province and contribute to the growth of the green economy, aligning with the government's vision for sustainable development.
