Dizon, Robredo Inspect Progress of 'Oplan Kontra Baha' Pilot Site in Naga

Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon visited Naga City again on Thursday to inspect the progress of cleanup operations at Sagop Creek in Barangay Concepcion Pequeña, the pilot site of the Marcos administration's flood control project "Oplan Kontra Baha." Dizon was accompanied by Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo and Bicol Regional Director Khadaffy Tanggol of the Department of Public Works and Highways. "Oplan Kontra Baha" is a government-led initiative aimed at mitigating the frequent flood damage experienced across the Philippines. Its effectiveness is particularly anticipated in urban areas, making the pilot project in Naga City a crucial step in verifying its efficacy. During the inspection, it was confirmed that dredging of the river, removal of sediment, and improvement of the surrounding environment were being prioritized. Secretary Dizon urged those involved to ensure the early completion of the project and to minimize the impact on local residents. In recent years, flood damage in the Philippines has been on the rise, partly due to the impacts of climate change. In urban areas, aging infrastructure and inadequate drainage systems have been contributing factors to the exacerbation of damage. The government aims to ensure the safety of its citizens and stabilize their livelihoods through such infrastructure development.
