From Pulpit to Screen: When Algorithms Become Religious Teachers in Indonesia

Religious teachings and sermons are rapidly spreading through online platforms in Indonesia. In particular, the rise of 'algorithmic preachers' is gaining attention, where social media and video-sharing site algorithms provide optimal religious content based on individual user interests and past viewing history. This phenomenon signifies a significant shift in the venue for religious guidance, traditionally handled by mosque preachers (khatibs), to the digital space. Users can now deepen their religious learning at their own pace, from the comfort of their homes or even while on the go. This has made access to religious information easier, especially among urban populations and the youth. However, this shift also presents new challenges. While algorithmic content delivery can deepen user interests, it is also pointed out that it may limit exposure to diverse perspectives and interpretations. Furthermore, the necessity for users to judge the accuracy of information and the religious authority of the disseminators is increasing. The relationship between traditional religious leaders and online influencers will also become a crucial point of discussion in Indonesia's religious landscape going forward.
