Vietnam Proposes New Food Safety Regulations for Online Food Delivery Services

Vietnam's Ministry of Health has initiated a public consultation period for a draft amendment to the Food Safety Law, which includes the first-ever specific regulations for online food delivery service providers regarding food safety assurance. This proposal aims to strengthen food safety management within Vietnam's rapidly expanding food delivery market. The proposed amendment is expected to impose new obligations on both platform operators and individual sellers to ensure food safety. Previously, the legal framework for food safety had not kept pace with the rapid proliferation of online platforms. This regulatory proposal seeks to address these issues, protect consumer safety, and promote the healthy development of the market. In Vietnam, the use of food delivery services has become widespread, particularly in cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with many citizens utilizing them daily. However, underlying risks concerning hygiene management and temperature control during delivery have been pointed out. This regulatory enhancement is likely to be a significant step in addressing these challenges and building consumer trust. Under Vietnam's one-party system, the Communist Party prioritizes socio-economic development and the improvement of people's lives, with food safety being a crucial pillar. Especially as diets diversify with economic growth, particularly in urban areas, such regulations are essential for safeguarding public health. While stabilizing supply chains and standardizing safety standards are also important in trade relations with China, this regulation primarily focuses on domestic market safety management. Once this bill is deliberated and officially enacted by the National Assembly, food delivery businesses will be compelled to adapt to new standards. For businesses, this may necessitate investments in strengthening hygiene management systems and employee training, potentially leading to increased costs. However, in the long term, improving food safety standards will enhance the credibility of Vietnam's entire food and beverage industry and contribute to its international reputation.
