Do Thanh Binh Appointed Secretary of Can Tho City Party Committee Again

Do Thanh Binh, 59, formerly Deputy Head of the Central Organization Commission, has been appointed Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee by the Communist Party of Vietnam's Politburo. This appointment underscores the regular reshuffling of key positions within Vietnam's one-party system and efforts to strengthen local governance. Nguyen Duy Ngoc, Head of the Central Organization Commission, presented the decision to Mr. Binh on the afternoon of July 25 at the Can Tho City Party Committee headquarters. Mr. Binh succeeds Le Quang Tung, who has been transferred to serve as Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee. According to the Politburo's decision, Mr. Binh will step down from his role as Deputy Head of the Central Organization Commission and will participate in the City Party Committee's Executive Committee and Standing Committee, serving as Secretary for the 2025-2030 term. He will also be nominated to lead the city's National Assembly delegation and appointed to the Party Committee of the 9th Military Region. Mr. Binh's reappointment is seen as a move to bolster leadership as Can Tho aims to become a national growth pole and a hub for commerce, logistics, marine economy, processing industry, digital technology, high-tech agriculture, advanced healthcare, and innovation by 2030. Following Can Tho's merger with Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces on July 1, 2025, the city, with an area of over 6,360 km2 and a population exceeding 4.19 million, is one of seven centrally-governed cities. By 2045, Can Tho aspires to be among the developed cities in Asia. Mr. Binh, who holds a Master's degree in Economics, has been appointed Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee three times, including twice before and after the city's merger, and now again. This repeated appointment highlights the Communist Party's emphasis on stable leadership in major provincial cities and its commitment to achieving development objectives. His previous roles as Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Home Affairs are expected to contribute to Can Tho's development.
