Vietnam Eyes VNeID Passport Integration for Streamlined Border Crossings

Vietnam is considering integrating passport functions into its national identification application, VNeID, aiming to enhance the efficiency of border control. The plan, with a potential launch date of January 1, 2026, is expected to improve convenience for citizens and facilitate faster entry and exit procedures. VNeID already provides digital versions of identification documents such as national ID cards and driver's licenses, and is widely used by the public. This integration of passport functions could potentially eliminate the need to carry physical passports, thereby reducing the burden for international travel and business trips. Vietnam has been actively promoting its digital economy in recent years, with the digitalization of administrative services being a key component of this strategy. Under its one-party system, the Communist Party of Vietnam seeks to balance improved citizen convenience with economic growth, and the development of such digital infrastructure serves as a crucial foundation. However, upon the actual implementation of this new system, technical challenges, security measures, and comprehensive public awareness campaigns will be critical considerations.
