Phu Quoc International Airport Sees 44% Surge in Flights Amid Expansion

The Phu Quoc International Airport on Vietnam's southern resort island has seen a significant increase in aircraft takeoffs and landings. According to the latest statistics, the number of takeoffs and landings neared 27,919, an increase of over 8,500 flights, or approximately 44%. This surge comes as the airport has maintained high-intensity operations while fast-tracking a major expansion project in preparation for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Week in 2027. The Vietnamese government is accelerating infrastructure development ahead of the APEC summit, with the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport being part of this initiative. Phu Quoc Island has solidified its position as an international tourist destination in recent years, making the rise in air traffic demand a natural progression. Its appeal has been globally recognized, including its inclusion in Expedia's 'Top 10 Island Destinations for 2026.' Furthermore, the expansion of international routes by Sun PhuQuoc Airways also contributes to improved accessibility to the island. Under Vietnam's one-party system, government-led large-scale infrastructure investments are a key driver of economic growth, with the development of airports and transportation networks being promoted as national strategies. This airport expansion is anticipated to boost future tourism growth and economic activity, contributing to Vietnam's further economic development. Particularly as China's relations become more complex, Vietnam prioritizes tourism and investment for economic growth, with the development of international resorts like Phu Quoc being a crucial pillar of this strategy.
