Heavy Rains Continue in Northern and Central Vietnam, Warning for Floods and Landslides Persists

Widespread, record-breaking heavy rainfall has been observed across northern Vietnam and extending into the northern central provinces of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An. Nghiêm Thị Ngọc Linh, a forecaster from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, warned that heavy rains are likely to continue in these areas. In response, Thanh Hoa province is closely monitoring the impact of rainfall and floods, establishing a rapid response system. Furthermore, the risk of flash floods and landslides has been identified in provinces such as Son La, Phu Tho, Lao Cai, Quang Ninh, and along the stretch from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh. Notably, in Quang Tri province, a newly constructed road leading to Truong Son border village has been severely damaged and cut off by the heavy rains. Urgent recovery efforts are underway in the province to address this destruction. The Ministry of Construction has instructed relevant agencies to implement proactive measures against heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides in the northern and central regions. While Vietnam has achieved economic growth under its one-party system, its vulnerability to natural disasters remains a constant challenge due to its geography, with large areas being low-lying or mountainous. The northern mountainous regions, bordering China, face particular urgency in infrastructure development and ensuring resident safety.
