Remains and Personal Effects of Fallen Soldiers from Cambodian Battlefields Return Home, Evoking Deep Emotion

The remains and personal effects of Vietnamese soldiers who fell on the fierce battlefields of Cambodia have been repatriated to their homeland after many years, bringing deep emotion to officials and bereaved families. These relics, by reuniting with former comrades and loved ones, once again highlight the tragedy of war and the preciousness of peace. The K51 Unit of the Dak Lak Provincial Military Command has collected and repatriated the remains of one more fallen soldier from the Cambodian battlefields. This indicates the significant role that information provided by residents has played in the efforts to collect the remains of fallen soldiers. In Dak Lak Province, a memorial ceremony was held to welcome back 27 sets of remains of fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives on the Cambodian battlefields, to the embrace of their motherland. This ceremony was attended by Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Doan Anh, who expressed his condolences to the fallen. Furthermore, the Dak Lak Provincial Border Guard organized a tribute event to commemorate the 79th anniversary of the Day for Fallen Soldiers and War Invalids (July 27). The province is also proceeding with efforts to collect DNA samples from relatives of unidentified fallen soldiers, demonstrating the ongoing efforts to fulfill the wishes of families still grappling with the aftermath of war. These events suggest that the memory of the Vietnam War remains vivid, continuing to convey the weight of peace to people living today. Under the one-party system, the memory of war is sometimes utilized for national integration and fostering patriotism, but simultaneously, respect for the fallen and the aspiration for peace are shared values across society. In its relations with China, there is a tendency to emphasize the maintenance of peace as a historical lesson.
