Cambodian Military Expands Role Beyond Defense to Combat Crime

The Ministry of Defense announced that in addition to its core mission of national defense, the Cambodian military has actively contributed to preventing and suppressing various crimes, in cooperation with law enforcement agencies and relevant technical departments. According to a report presented at the monthly meeting held on August 3, 2026, the Cambodian People's Armed Forces have taken the initiative and collaborated with authorities at all levels and relevant institutions to prevent, deter, and suppress all types of criminal activities and anarchic acts, including illegal land grabbing, destruction of natural resources, illegal fishing, tax evasion, drug trafficking and use, and technology-based fraud. The report indicates that out of 429 serious and intermediate criminal cases that occurred in July 2026, the Cambodian People's Armed Forces successfully suppressed 254 cases. Regarding national defense duties, the report states that the Cambodian People's Armed Forces continue to focus on implementing the government's "Pentagonal Strategy Political Program" and other pressing tasks. This includes regular patrols along the border areas with Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. The aforementioned report further highlights the Cambodian military's continued full and most stringent adherence to the joint statement on the peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand. Cambodia also unequivocally rejects any border demarcation changes resulting from illegal occupation by the Thai army.
