Aceh, North Sumatra Face Potential Heavy Rain: BMKG Urges Preparedness

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged people in Aceh and North Sumatra to increase their readiness to face the potential for extreme weather in the form of heavy to very heavy rain on Tuesday, September 8. BMKG Praktirawan Miftah Ali stated that the potential for increased rain cloud growth is triggered by the formation of convergence and confluence areas in several regions of Indonesia. The convergence area extends from the western waters of Aceh to the western coast of Aceh, the Flores Sea, the Arafuru Sea, the Banda Sea, and Central Papua to Papua. Meanwhile, the confluence is observed in the northern Malacca Strait, the South China Sea, the Sulawesi Sea, to the north of Papua. "For the major cities in western Indonesia, BMKG predicts the potential for lightning rain to occur in Tanjung Selor," said Miftah Tuesday morning. Light rain is likely to fall in Medan, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Pontianak, Palangkaraya, and Banjarmasin. Meanwhile, the Banda Aceh, Jakarta, Serang, and Surabaya regions are predicted to be cloudy to cloudy. The phenomenon of hazy air has the potential to cover Pekanbaru, Jambi, Palembang, Bandar Lampung, and Samarinda, as well as the potential for smoke/fog in Padang. In eastern Indonesia, moderate rain is predicted to occur in Nabire, while light rain has the potential to rain on Mamuju, Palu, Sorong, and Jayawijaya. The cities of Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Manado, Ambon, and Jayapura are predicted to be cloudy to cloudy, and there is a potential for hazy air in Merauke.
