Burundi Offers to Bridge Vietnam's Ties with African Union

Révérien Ndikuriyo, Secretary-General of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Party of the Defense of Revolution (CNDD-FDD) of Burundi, has affirmed Burundi's readiness to act as a bridge for Vietnam to enhance its relations and engage in specific cooperation models, initiatives, and programs with the African Union (AU). This commitment was made in light of Burundi's upcoming chairmanship of the AU for the 2026-2027 term. During a meeting with Trần Cẩm Tú, Standing Member of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Ndikuriyo emphasized Burundi's willingness to facilitate Vietnam's deeper integration into AU frameworks. The discussions also highlighted the importance of strengthening solidarity between Vietnam and Burundi and jointly promoting their roles in maintaining a peaceful and stable environment. The exchange of congratulatory messages on the occasion of Burundi's National Day further underscored the bilateral ties. Vietnam, guided by its one-party system, is actively pursuing economic development and seeking to amplify its international presence. Its strategy includes deepening engagement with African nations, which is crucial for resource acquisition, market expansion, and strengthening its global political posture. Burundi's prospective AU leadership offers Vietnam a strategic gateway to the African continent, allowing it to pursue its diplomatic objectives in a region where China's influence is prominent. Vietnam's proactive approach signals its intent to carve out its own diplomatic niche and increase its regional standing.
