Vietnam Plans Tam Dao Tunnel Project, A $240 Million Infrastructure Investment
Phu Tho and Thai Nguyen provinces in northern Vietnam are collaborating on a new Tam Dao road tunnel project. With an estimated investment of VND 5.8 trillion (approximately $240 million), the project is slated for implementation between 2026 and 2029, aiming to enhance regional connectivity and economic growth.
Phu Tho and Thai Nguyen provinces in northern Vietnam have discussed investment plans for the construction of the Tam Dao road tunnel, which will connect the two localities. This project is expected to significantly improve transportation access between the two provinces and contribute to the revitalization of the regional economy. The planned project will have a total length of approximately 18.8 kilometers. Of this, the tunnel section through the Tam Dao mountain range is expected to be about 2 kilometers long, and will include two tunnel tubes and seven bridges. The total investment is estimated at VND 5.8 trillion (approximately $240 million), with implementation scheduled from 2026 to 2029. The project is expected to have a concession period of about 30 years for toll collection. This infrastructure investment is seen as part of Vietnam's economic growth strategy. In particular, improving logistics efficiency between increasingly industrialized northern regions could lead to supply chain strengthening and attract new industries. Under Vietnam's one-party system, large-scale infrastructure projects like this are typically driven by the state, with economic growth consistently prioritized. Furthermore, for Vietnam, which has strong economic ties with China, developing domestic infrastructure is crucial for enhancing regional economic autonomy and strengthening international competitiveness.
