Thai Nguyen Province Aims to Complete Martyr Remains DNA Sampling in September

Thai Nguyen Province in northern Vietnam is aiming to complete the DNA sampling process for martyr remains within September. According to the provincial Steering Committee for the Search, Collection, and Identification of Martyr Remains, 376 out of a total of 941 graves requiring DNA identification have been exhumed and sampled. Furthermore, 3,919 out of 4,007 biological samples from relatives of martyrs have been collected, achieving 97.8% of the plan. This initiative is part of a nationwide effort in Vietnam to collect and identify the remains of soldiers who died during past conflicts. With many remains still unidentified and buried, and families long hoping for their loved ones' return, the government has prioritized the collection and identification of martyrs' remains. The current progress in Thai Nguyen Province demonstrates concrete efforts at the local level to achieve this national objective. Under Vietnam's single-party system, the commemoration of historical events and honoring those who sacrificed for the nation are key policy priorities aimed at strengthening national unity and social cohesion. Specifically, identifying the remains of the many lives lost in past conflicts, including the Vietnam War, is considered indispensable for addressing the sentiments of the people and maintaining social stability. While Vietnam continues its economic growth, efforts to settle accounts with the past remain a crucial aspect of national governance.
