Clash in Papua, Indonesia: 4 OPM Members Killed in Confrontation with TNI

Four members of the Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM), a separatist group in Indonesia, were reported dead following a firefight with members of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) in Central Papua on Friday (September 25). The incident reportedly began when personnel from the TNI's Habema Operational Command, specifically from Yonif 315/Garuda and the Taipur Team, were conducting area security in Balamai Atas Village, Hitadipa District, Central Papua. This operation was initiated following intelligence indicating the presence of an armed OPM group from Kodap VIII/Intan Jaya, led by Daniel Aibon Kogoya, in the vicinity. Brig. Gen. Riyanto, Commander of the TNI Habema Operational Command, stated that the personnel proceeded with careful checks and monitoring to ensure the situation and prevent threats to the community. During this security operation, a firefight erupted between the TNI personnel and the armed group. According to initial reports from the field, four members of the armed group were killed. Two were found near the scene of the incident, while the other two reportedly fell into a ravine during the exchange of gunfire. The TNI personnel also secured several items from the scene. Initial identification revealed one SS2 V1 rifle, one long firearm with a Trijicon scope, 50 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition, one SS2 V1 magazine, communication devices, mobile phones, and other field equipment. These findings have been secured for further investigation in accordance with applicable regulations. Brig. Gen. Riyanto emphasized that all actions by soldiers in the field must be carried out selectively, measurably, professionally, and in accordance with the law, with the safety of the community as the top priority. "Firmness against threats and protection of the community must go hand in hand. Every soldier's action must be measured, selective, professional, and still respect human values. The ultimate goal is not just to overcome security disturbances, but to create a safe space for the community to live their lives peacefully," he said. He urged members of the armed group still in the forests and mountains to abandon violence and return to their families and communities. "To our brothers and sisters who are still outside the village, the path to return is always open. Come back to your families, your community, and your hometown," he stated. "Let us build Papua together. Courage is not only when one is capable of raising a weapon, but also when one is brave enough to lay it down and choose a better life," he concluded.
