While tsunamis may go unnoticed in the deep sea, they lose speed and gain destructive power near coasts. Marine life faces habitat destruction and stranding risks, with ecosystems like coral reefs suffering severe damage.
When a tsunami crosses the ocean, what actually happens to the creatures below the surface depends on their location. In the deep sea, tsunami waves may pass unnoticed by most of their inhabitants. However, the situation changes drastically as the waves approach the coast. Tsunamis occur due to the sudden displacement of a body of water, typically triggered by a vertical change on the sea surface. In the deep ocean, waves can travel up to 800 kilometers per hour. Despite this high speed, the rise in water level in these areas can sometimes be only a few inches, and ships sailing above may not even realize a tsunami wave is passing. Similar situations can occur for marine life living far below the surface. The real danger emerges when the waves enter shallow waters. Their speed decreases, but their height and destructive power increase. Water being pulled back towards the sea from the coast can drag marine life out of its habitat. Animals unable to keep up with the water's movement risk being stranded, injured, or killed. When waves hit the coastline, it's not just marine life that is affected. Important habitats such as coral reefs, mangrove forests, and seagrass beds can also be severely damaged. These areas serve as shelters, feeding grounds, and breeding areas for various types of fish and other marine organisms. Coral reefs even play a role in naturally breaking waves, but they can still be destroyed by the force of a tsunami. The threat does not end after the water recedes. The waves returning to the sea carry debris, toxic chemicals, and various hazardous materials from land. Seabed sediments are also stirred up, making the water turbid and reducing its quality. Marine life that survives the initial impact may later die due to habitat destruction and deteriorating water conditions.
