Elderly Woman Dies After Ignoring Railway Crossing Signals in Nghe An
An 86-year-old woman in Vietnam's central Nghe An province died after being hit by a train. She reportedly ignored lowered crossing gates and warning lights while crossing the railway tracks after gathering snails. This marks the province's first rail fatality this year.
An 86-year-old woman, identified as Nguyen Thi Thanh, died after being struck by a train in Lam Thanh commune, Nghe An province, on August 9th. The incident occurred around 10:29 AM at railway crossing point km 328+350 in Thon 2, Lam Thanh commune (formerly Hung Nguyen district). Despite the railway crossing gates being lowered and automatic warning lights activated, Ms. Thanh proceeded to cross the tracks. Train SE8's driver applied emergency brakes upon spotting a person ahead, but due to the close proximity, the collision was unavoidable. Ms. Thanh was thrown approximately 2 meters from the tracks and about 15 meters from the crossing, sustaining severe multiple injuries and passing away at the scene. The accident caused Train SE8 to halt for approximately 25 minutes, resulting in a delay to its schedule. For the first eight months of 2026, this incident marks the first traffic fatality on the railway in Nghe An province. The province has a total of 171 road-railway intersections, including 73 official crossings.
