Vietnam: Man Sentenced to Death for Killing Ex-Girlfriend's Father on New Year's Eve

In Tay Ninh Province, southern Vietnam, Bùi Bảo Tài has been sentenced to death by the provincial People's Court for the murder of his ex-girlfriend's father. He also received a two-year prison sentence for the illegal use of a firearm, resulting in a combined death sentence. The defendant, from Vĩnh Hưng commune, did not have a stable occupation. Two years prior, Tài and a 21-year-old woman had been living together as husband and wife. However, the woman's parents forbade him from visiting their newborn child, as Tài was not yet ready for marriage. At the time of the incident, the woman and her child had moved back to live with her family. The crime occurred on the eve of the Lunar New Year (Tet), February 17th. Tài brought a long knife, concealed in his coat pocket, and went to the vicinity of his ex-girlfriend's home. He climbed over the fence into a small grocery store and proceeded to the bedroom, where he attacked the 46-year-old man, the victim, as he slept. Upon hearing her husband's cries, the woman's mother and ex-girlfriend rushed to intervene. They managed to restrain Tài with a rope and handed him over to the police. The victim later died from his injuries. This case highlights the tragic consequences of family disputes and the emotional impulses of young individuals in Vietnamese society. The background to such serious incidents occurring amidst the interplay of traditional family values and modern perspectives in Vietnam is a subject of attention.
