Cambodia and Singapore Enhance Military Cooperation, Request Continued Support for Border Observer Mission
Cambodian Army Commander General Vong Pisen met with Singapore's Deputy Secretary for Policy, Frederick Choo, agreeing to deepen bilateral military cooperation. Cambodia requested Singapore's continued support for the ASEAN Observer Mission in the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute.
General Vong Pisen, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, received a courtesy call and held discussions with Deputy Secretary for Policy, Ministry of Defence of Singapore, Frederick Choo, on July 15, 2026, at the General Headquarters of the Cambodian Armed Forces. During the meeting, both sides affirmed their commitment to further strengthening Cambodia-Singapore military cooperation through human resource development, exchange visits, security information sharing, and cooperation in combating terrorism, transnational crime, and conducting joint military exercises. Mr. Frederick Choo informed that Singapore will assume the rotating Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2027, during which it will host the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting and the ASEAN Chiefs of General Staff Meeting, as well as fulfill the role of Chair of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT). Regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border issue, General Vong Pisen affirmed that Cambodia continues to adhere to a peaceful approach in resolving the Cambodia-Thailand border issue, based on international law and existing bilateral agreements, and will not accept the use of force to alter borders. The Commander-in-Chief also expressed his gratitude to Singapore for supporting the ceasefire and dispatching officers to join the ASEAN Observer Team, and requested continued support for this mission to ensure the implementation of the ceasefire and the restoration of peace along the Cambodia-Thailand border. In response, Mr. Frederick Choo highly commended Cambodia's patience and commitment to resolving issues peacefully in accordance with international law, and affirmed that Singapore will continue to play an active role in the AOT mission to promote transparency, peace, and harmony in the region.
